Fourteen proud owners of BMW motorbikes saw action during the first leg of the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy qualifiers this weekend. The VisMin round took place on a makeshift obstacle course at the Crocodile Farm in Davao City.
Clad in full riding gear, the 14 adventure-seeking individuals from Visayas and Mindanao arrived at the venue hoping to represent the country and Southeast Asia at the 2020 BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy. This major event will be held in New Zealand next year.
Our country’s three representatives will be chosen from two local qualifying events: the VisMin leg and the upcoming Luzon leg (on September 6-7, venue to be announced). At the height of the VisMin round, some BMW riders from Metro Manila were apparently already honing their skills for the Luzon qualifier, as evidenced by photos they have posted on social media. They know making it to the final three isn’t going to be easy.
In fact, on the first day of the VisMin edition, six riders were knocked out of the competition for receiving the most number of penalties upon hitting pylons or dropping their bikes on the obstable course. The three-man teams chosen from the VisMin and Luzon qualifiers will face-off at the national qualifier on September 8.
The team to emerge victorious in the national level will be our country’s representatives at the Southeast Asia Qualifier in Malaysia on September 21-22. From there, they will slug it out with the best riders from Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia. The best team will head on to the main event in New Zealand next year.
The VisMin leg wrapped up today, August 25, with three riders from Davao City—Pietro Jaldon, James Hope Ferolin, and Shawn Lim—surviving to compete in the national qualifier.
