Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW were the first luxury carmakers to jump on the opulent SUV bandwagon with the LX, the M-Class and the X5, respectively. Only a week ago, Maserati reportedly revealed that it, too, is entering the luxury SUV fray. Now, it’s Bentley's turn to join the club.
Bentley chief executive Wolfgang Durheimer has reportedly confirmed to Top Gear UK that the carmaker is already working on its very first luxury crossover SUV that will use the same platform that the next-generation Audi Q7 will be based on.
Although Bentley's parent company, Volkswagen AG, has yet to give the go-signal to the SUV's production, Durheimer revealed it is likely to be equipped with the 6.0-liter, 621hp W12 engine the British luxury marque uses on its Continental Supersports. It might also be equipped with a version of the Audi Q7’s 6.0-liter V12 diesel mill that has nearly 1,000Nm of torque and a zero-to-100kph sprint time of 5.5 seconds.
The very first Bentley SUV is expected to hit the market in 2014.
