You’ve seen the news that the 1.5-liter variants of the Toyota Vios have been discontinued. Based on Toyota Motor Philippines’ website, these are no longer being offered. Sure, there might be stocks of it left, but once those are done, so is the larger-engined variant.

So, which specific variants have been axed? That would be the 1.5G and the sportier 1.5 GR-S. The only ones left are the 1.3 XLE, 1.3 XE, and the fleet-special 1.3 J.

Given that the Vios is locally produced, does this mean the higher trim levels will soon make way for the all-new model? There’s no official word from Toyota yet, but it’s a possibility.

The fifth-generation made its world premiere as the Yaris Ativ in Thailand in August 2022. Most of our neighboring countries have it by now, but strangely, not in the Philippines. Odd, given that the demand for the Vios is strong here. It is the best-selling car in the land, after all.

That said, most Vios sales here consist of the 1.3-liter variants. But even prior to the 1.5-liter’s discontinuation, Toyota had begun downsizing the trim levels for the sedan. It appears to suggest that the factory is winding down production.

Given that the all-new Toyota Vios rides on a new Daihatsu platform, it will require an extensive retooling of the local assembly line. However, there has been some reports suggesting that it will be brought in here as an imported unit and eventually phase out the current generation.

It’s also possible that Toyota will take a two-pronged approach for the Vios. As seen in the Zenix and Innova, those who prefer the more modern version are free to choose it. At the same time, the more traditional buyer will appreciate the availability of the previous model.

Toyota has done that move multiple times in the past. For those who still remember, the Revo and Innova were sold alongside each other until the latter eventually took its place. If you want to go even further, the ‘Love Life’ Corolla was being made at the same time as the first bigger-bodied Corolla Altis. The prior was primarily aimed at fleets and traditional buyers, while the latter was more upmarket.
