Honda Cars Philippines (HCPI) previously revealed that a total of 3,111 CR-V units were sold locally in 2018. That success could easily be attributed to the diesel-powered variants that were first introduced a few years back, because it’s pretty clear that we Filipinos love fuel-efficient people-haulers.

But if you thought that a diesel engine on a CR-V was exciting enough, then get this: Honda has introduced a hybrid variant of its famous crossover in America. We’re hoping we see the same powertrain launched in the Philippines as well. Now that Toyota PH has released a hybrid version of its popular Corolla Altis, the market could be more receptive to alternative powerplants.

“The Honda CR-V is the best-selling compact SUV over the past two decades and the updates we’ve made to the 2020 model, including a new hybrid-electric variant, solidify its position as a leader in the market,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of automobile sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

But apart from the new hybrid variant, what other updates are we talking about here? Let’s take a closer look:

First up is the exterior: The 2020 Honda CR-V now has a more aggressive front fascia, with a redesigned chrome grille and a rugged bumper. The hybrid models now also get a distinctive blue Honda logo up front and a corresponding badge at the rear. The taillights have now been given a darker tint, paired with a dark chrome finish on the garnish below the rear glass. The new CR-V also gets new chrome exhausts, save for the hybrid models which sport a hidden tailpipe instead. It comes with either 18 or 19-inch dark gray, machine-finished wheels.

Inside, the center console bin has been redesigned as well. The Touring variant now comes with Qi-compatible wireless cellphone charging, while all trims feature a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility—not to mention the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System.

Other extra features include remote engine start, dual-zone climate control, an electric parking brake, and rear USB charging ports. Four-way power adjustment is available for the passenger seat, while the driver’s seat can be adjusted eight ways with an additional four-way power lumbar support. Oh, and heated front seats are available here, too—not that we’d be needing it within Metro Manila anyway.

As we said, a hybrid setup is now available under the hood. This two-motor hybrid powertrain is shared with the Accord Hybrid and combines two electric motors with a 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC Atkinson cycle engine, which gives the CR-V a combined maximum output of 212hp. This hybrid powertrain is available with an all-wheel-drive setup and boasts a long-range electric-only operation. The non-hybrid models, on the other hand, are propelled by a 1.5-liter turbocharged VTEC capable of 190hp—that’s already more powerful than the 2.0-liter CR-V that HCPI currently offers.

Meanwhile, the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assist technologies now come as standard with the 2020 models. These include features such as lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and road departure mitigation with lane departure warning. A collision mitigation braking system (CMBS) with forward collision warning and pedestrian sensing capability is also added in the mix.

Blind spot information, rear cross-traffic monitor, and auto high beam headlights are also available here. For the hybrid units, an acoustic vehicle alerting system is also included for improved pedestrian safety when the CR-V is running solely on electricity.

Pretty exciting, isn’t it? Now, the big question is: When will HCPI bring in the new CR-V? Perhaps only time will tell, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
