The MG Majestor is aimed squarely at the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest

A midsize SUV from MG? Why not?

MG isn’t exactly the first brand that comes to mind when it comes to midsize SUVs. Over in India, however, things are a little different. There, they have something called the Gloster, a model aimed squarely at the Toyota Fortuner.

But now, it’s now time for the Gloster to head for retirement. In its place is a new model called the MG Majestor. And while the name is different, its primary target is still the same.

Like the Gloster, the Majestor is based on an existing Maxus product. In this case, it’s the heavily updated version of the D90. As far as we can tell, the MG version is a straight rebadge of the Maxus with the grille and badges being the only differences of note.

MG claims their entry in the midsize SUV market has the largest dimensions in its class. It measures 5,005mm long, 1,932mm wide, 1,875mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,950mm. Ground clearance is rated at 210mm, while wading capacity is 550mm.

There are no interior photos, at least for now, but we’re expecting the Majestor to have a near-identical cabin to the D90. That means a wide and expansive dash with a rather interesting handlebar, a floating infotainment screen, and a digital instrument cluster. There’s a variety of interior colors available, and there’s even an option for a six-seater layout with a pair of captain’s chairs in the middle row.

For safety features, this SUV is expected to come with advanced driver assist systems. It’s fitted with conveniences such as adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking.

Final engine specs of the MG Majestor have yet to be determined but will likely be lifted from the Maxus D90. If so, we could expect a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged diesel that makes 214hp and 500Nm, making it one of the most powerful in its class. It then shifts with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It looks like a promising model, but there is one caveat. Historically, only right-hand drive markets got the MG-badged version of the Maxus D90 and it could be the case here. MG Philippines could, perhaps, make a case for selling the Majestor here given the strong demand for these SUVs. Fingers crossed they succeed.
