Here’s a name you haven’t heard in a while: Mitsubishi Grandis. For those who don’t remember what it was, it was originally an MPV that was based on the second-generation Outlander. It was unashamedly practical and looked swoopy for a family bus.

It had a relatively lengthy production run, spanning from 2003 all the way to 2011. Despite that, only one generation was made, marking the end of Mitsubishi’s entry in the premium MPV market.

Fast forward to 2025, and the Mitsubishi Grandis has been revived. Mind you, it’s no longer an MPV. It’s not even a fully-fledged Mitsubishi product anymore. Instead, it’s now a hybrid crossover.

You’re probably wondering why we said it’s not a fully-fledged Mitsubishi anymore. As the company is part of the alliance that includes Nissan and Renault, the reborn Grandis is essentially a rebadged Renault Symbioz.

The new Grandis is the latest Mitsubishi-badged Renault to roll out. The first was the Colt, a rebranded Renault Clio, followed by the ASX, a Renault Captur in all but the name.

For looks, it’s practically identical to its Renault counterpart. There are a couple of detail differences, though, namely with its bumper and grille. It does get a different set of wheels to make it more distinct from the Symbioz, but all-in-all, it’s straight up badge engineering.

The same could be said for its interior. The only changes were the display for the infotainment screen, and the addition of a Mitsubishi badge on the horn badge. It has all the usual niceties such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it also comes with a Google assistant, while a Harman/Kardon sound system is available for higher trim levels.

A novel feature called the Eco Predictive Assistant is said to encourage the driver to be more sensible with the accelerator. It alerts the driver to decelerate depending on road context and speed limit. It works in conjuction with the Predictive Hybrid Assistant that optimizes fuel and energy consumption when the vehicle is in a traffic jam or urban areas.

For safety, it comes with a barrage of airbags, traction control, and stability control. As it’s a European market vehicle, advanced driver assists are fitted standard. Adaptive cruise is present, so is autonomous emergency braking, and lane keep assist, to name a few. Mitsubishi is proud of the fact that it has 12 ultrasonic sensors, four cameras, and a front facing radar.

The revived Grandis uses the same powertrain as the Renault Symbioz. That means a choice between a 1.3-liter mild-hybrid turbo or a 1.8-liter hybrid. The 1.3-liter puts out 138hp and can be mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. As for the 1.8-liter hybrid, that one makes 154hp that’s interestingly hooked up to a four-speed automatic.

This model won’t be offered outside of Europe. The new Grandis is part of Mitsubishi’s plan to revitalize its Continental operations by serving up Renault-based vehicles. And while the Grandis isn’t the first Mitsubishi-badged Renault, it’s safe to say it won’t be the last.
