There’s a lot to like about the Subaru Outback. It has all the practicalities of a station wagon, all while having a fair bit of off-road capabilities. If anything, it’s has all the makings of the perfect all-rounder. It’s also a good choice for those who’d really prefer a station wagon but need a little more ground clearance.
However, the current model isn’t what anyone would call young. Launched in 2019, this wagon on tall tires is in need of a full model change. And that’s exactly what Subaru is going. Or at least, going to do.

After six years, an all-new model is coming soon. Don’t get too excited yet, though, as it’s a teaser for now and the model is slated for the 2026 model year. Still, an all-new Outback is something to get excited about.

Okay, the teaser doesn’t show too much. It’s throwing around dirt, hiding a good chunk of details. Still, we can see that the roof is much taller than the outgoing model, suggesting that it will take on a more SUV-like shape. It also looks boxier and upright, the current design tree in SUVs and crossovers. We do admit, we’ll miss the wagon look.
We’re expecting a massive redesign of the interior. Elements from the all-new Forester might be applied to the next-gen Outback, from its dashboard design to infotainment system. Given that it appears to be larger, passenger and cargo space could grow by a fair amount.

Given its positioning in the lineup, we might see the 2026 Subaru Outback use the WRX-derived 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine. At the same time, we wouldn’t be too surprised if a hybrid will be offered down the line.
More details will be revealed this week, along with more cars to be shown at the upcoming New York Auto Show.
