BMW is set to take on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, as its new luxury off-roader is scheduled to debut in 2029. According to Automotive News, BMW already has the main component to manufacture its first off-roader—named in the report as the G74.
It will most likely be based on the current X5 platform, which suggests that an electrified variant could also be in the mix. However, since it’s being positioned as an off-roader, the G74 will most likely feature significant modifications to its suspension and drivetrain to better handle overland driving.

The engineers at Bavaria also expect this maiden off-roader to succeed the existing BMW XM. In the Philippines, the XM Red Label stickers for a hefty P18.890 million, putting it right in the same price bracket as the G450d. Eyeing the G-Wagen as its main competitor, the G74 will likely retain an eight-digit price range if brought to the local market.

That sounds like a lot of ambition for one new car, but it looks like BMW is in no rush to roll this out. If the G74 truly wants to attack the G-Class on all fronts, it could debut with multiple variants and powertrain options.
Having a fully electric G74—perhaps on the Neue Klasse platform—puts it head-to-head with the G580, while also going in contention with the slew of high-performance off-roading EVs from China. But that is a lot of speculation, and we will only learn more as we get closer to 2029.
