When it comes to high-performance German sedans, there’s no denying which car kicked it off. We are, of course, talking about the BMW M5. Introduced in 1985, the M5 has since spawned several competitors in the last 39 years.

The most recent M5, internally known as the F90, capped off production in 2023. That means the daddy of all 5-Series sedans is on a bit of a sabbatical at the moment. Of course, the launch of the latest generation 5-Series means it’s only a matter of time before it returns.

And BMW has done exactly that. The folks from Bavaria recently premiered a teaser video for the all-new M5, now internally known as the G90. We see a couple of design sketches, along with some tasty action shots along the way.

The car is still camouflaged for now, but we do see several design details of interest. For starters, it won’t have the controversial vertical grille like what’s seen in the M3 and M4. Secondly, the prototypes and design sketches hint at wide fenders for both the sedan and the wagon version, the Touring. Other things to expect are a unique set of bumpers at the front and rear, some exposed carbon fiber bits, and M-specific grille slats.

At the moment, there are no shots of the interior. In the video, the cabin was still covered in sheets to deter spy photographers. That said, we do know what the interior of the standard 5-Series looks like, so we could start from there. There’s a good chance we’ll see carbon fiber trimmings in there, along with a sportier-looking set of displays in its widescreen digital cluster and infotainment system. Body-hugging bucket seats are practically a given at this point.

What about technical highlights? We’ll have to wait a little longer for the official figures. But enthusiasts don’t need to worry as the M5 won’t go the way of AMG’s downsized turbo route. We’re glad to report that we can hear a V8 in the video. The G90 BMW M5 will likely inherit the XM’s electrified and turbocharged eight-cylinder powertrain. It’s a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 that’s mated to a powerful electric motor a massive battery pack.

Its plug-in hybrid setup should give it a bit more efficiency if that’s a concern any potential customer. Power ratings could be north of 700hp, while torque could get close to the 1,000Nm mark. All-wheel drive is standard, although the taser vid suggests that rear-wheel drive mode is still present.

Those estimates should make this the most powerful M5 to date, although the additional hardware could also make it the heaviest. It will be interesting to see how it performs, especially since this is the first electrified M5 to hit the market.
