That’s a very, very bold move

Chinese automotive giant BYD is gearing up to debut its version of a kei car at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. From the teaser alone, it surely looks the part with its sliding doors and boxy frame, but its functionality will determine if it will be accepted in the Japanese automotive market.

Right away, BYD strays from tradition as it’s opted to use a fully electric powerplant in place of a low-displacement combustion engine. The brand’s theme for this year’s show revolves around being a fresh, new energy option for buyers—attracting their consideration with the tagline, “Maybe, BYD.”

It’s definitely a bold move, but there is no better proving ground for an all-new kei car than the Japanese market. These types of vehicles are produced by heritage brands and have a legacy of being reliable people carriers, utility vehicles, and general low-cost mobility options for many Japanese citizens. It is a sacred segment, and it looks like BYD believes it can take these brands head-on and shift the market to electric vehicles.

BYD already produces compact electric vehicles like the Seagull and Dolphin, but a kei car is a completely different form factor. The cabin should fit seven passengers, with adjustable second- and third-row seating to maximize its cargo space. Many kei cars are also offered with AWD systems to cater to Japanese residents living in provincial environments—perhaps BYD could be preparing single- and dual-motor options for Japanese customers.

This also wouldn’t be BYD’s first run-in with the Japanese market, as last year the Seal was crowned as the Japan EV of the Year. And the year before that, the Dolphin had won the same award. It looks like BYD already has some decent footing in the Land of the Rising Sun, but the kei car is an entirely different mountain to conquer.
