BYD’s range consists of electrified models these days. Whether it’s battery-powered or plug-in hybrid, its products have some form of electric propulsion in one way or another.

So far, we have sedans and crossovers from the brand. However, if it wants to make a greater impact in Southeast Asia, it must have an MPV. So far, there is none in the lineup, at least in the region.

But that has been rectified now. Meet the BYD M6, and it just made its ASEAN debut at the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.

This MPV was initially called the Song Max when it was saddled with a 1.5-liter turbo engine. But with BYD discontinuing all of its non-electrified models, the Song Max has been turned into the M6, swapping its engine for an electric motor.

Before we move to how much power it makes, let’s take a look at its practical proposition. There are two versions on offer, namely a seven-seater (Standard) and a plusher six-seater model (Superior). As it still uses an adapted gas-powered vehicle platform, it doesn’t have quite the same interior one expects from EVs, but it appears large enough nonetheless.

Inside, there’s a floating screen that can rotate like in other BYD models. Despite being an EV, it still comes with a set of analog gauges. That said, there is a color multi-information display to show vehicle status. Of course, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Other features of interest? All variants come with a six-speaker audio system, keyless entry, automatic climate control, surround-view cameras, and cruise control. In terms of safety, there’s six airbags and stability control fitted to these MPV.

But opt for the Superior variant and it adds ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, roof rails, wireless charging, and power tailgate. This variant also benefits from advanced driver assist systems. It includes adaptive cruise, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and auto high beams.

As for powertrain, the Standard uses a 55.4kWh battery while the Superior packs a much larger 71.8kWh unit. Horsepower and torque ratings are at 161hp and 310Nm of torque for the Standard. The Superior gets more punch at 201hp, but torque is retained at 310Nm as well.

So, what are the odds of the BYD M6 coming to the Philippines? Well, that will depend on the local distributor. But given that we're a strong market for MPVs, it's possible that they're looking at this model with interest.
