One can say that the BYD Sealion 6 has become one of the fastest selling cars in the country today. It’s not just selling well because of its price which is at a reasonable P1.55-M. It’s also because it’s well equipped for the price, neatly styled, practical, and immensely efficient.
There’s a lot to like about the Sealion 6 on paper. If one were to buy a car solely on spec sheet data, it’s almost a no-brainer. We will admit that the driving experience is a bit ordinary…which makes it perfect for people who just want point A to B transport in maximum efficiency without the range anxiety.

Given the popularity of this model, it’s worth asking how safe it is. Well already know that it performs well in crash tests and its advanced driver assists are up to scratch. But how does it fare in an emergency handling situation? Cue the moose test.

Spanish automotive publication KM77 has put the popular crossover through its paces recently. Over there, it’s called the Seal U, and yes, BYD has also made its way there as well. So, if you want to know how it performed the emergency maneuver, check out the video below.
KM77 is called as such because they perform the test at, you guessed it, 77kph. In its first pass, the tester noted heavy body roll and the stability control kicked in late. Repeated runs varied from the rear kicking out to moderate but controllable understeer. Its best run was 74kph which is par for the course for these kinds of crossovers.

Conclusion? KM77 said the emergency handling characteristics of the BYD Sealion 6 can be a little disconcerting. Again, it’s due to the instances of the stability control going off late at times and its inconsistent engagement. Another factor was the soft suspension and minimal feedback from the steering wheel. While handling isn’t wayward per se, it does require sharper reactions in case of an evasive maneuver.
