It might have been a bit of a love or hate car, but one can’t deny that the Ford EcoSport helped boost the American automaker’s appeal even further in the country. It was a popular buy throughout its production cycle but was pulled out of the local market just a few years ago because, well, it was getting old.

At the moment, Ford doesn’t have a subcompact crossover. Sure, there’s the Territory, but that one treads the fine line between compact and subcompact because of its size. Given that we’re seeing more mini crossovers available these days, now might be a good time for Ford to revisit that segment.

By the looks of things, that might be a possibility. Ford recently filed for a design patent for what appears to be a mini crossover. It doesn’t have a name yet, nor has the automaker made anything official. Either way, it all points to a possible EcoSport revival.

It is yet to be determined if this mini crossover will still be called the Ford EcoSport. That being said, the dimensions appear to be smaller than that of the Territory. In terms of design, it follows Ford’s current design language with a slim pair of headlights and a large, prominent grille. There’s a hint of Territory around the rear pillar with its ‘floating roof’ design.

So, when is it coming to production? That’s still unknown and design patents don’t always make it to the road. But should this model be made, it has the potential to rival the likes of the Toyota Yaris Cross, Hyundai Creta, and various Chinese subcompact crossovers. Will it be a success? Of course, Ford has to build the crossover first to find out...and if the price will be just right.
