The Ford Ranger Police Package looks properly tough

Would be a nice addition to the motor pool

When it comes to police vehicles, Ford is one of the biggest suppliers out there. Just take a look at the police fleets over in the US, and you’ll see departments lined with rows and rows of the Explorer-based Police Interceptor.

But it’s not just in the US where Ford is heavily invested in police vehicles. Around the world, there are various cop-spec versions of its models that are upgraded to meet the demands of the job.

One of the more recent models to the police package is the Ford Ranger. Available on order basis through Ford’s global fleet, it comes with several upgrades you won’t find in the civilian version sitting in showrooms. And no, regular folks like us can’t buy it.

So, what does it get? Right off the bat, there’s the steel bumper with a built-in winch and bullbar. The LED lightbar is also included, as well as a siren and PA system. You won’t find a step board on this Ranger as extra ground clearance takes higher priority.

No fancy alloy wheels or chrome bits here. Instead, it rides on steel rims and the trims such as the side mirrors and door handles are left unpainted. Other standard-fit items include a snorkel, GPS tracker, fire extinguisher, and fuel can holders.

But the most important changes aren’t seen from the outside. To cope with harsh use that these vehicles go through, the suspension has been beefed up to handle extra loads, shrug off road imperfections, and maintain off-road abilities. The brakes are also larger compared to the standard version, while the cooling system and alternator have been upgraded to heavy-duty units.

There’s no mention what kind of engine the Ford Ranger Police Package uses. That said, there could be a choice between the 2.0-liter EcoBlue turbodiesel or the twin-turbo version of the same engine.

How much is it, you ask? As mentioned, us civilians can’t order one, so it’s hard to say. The final price will also depend on what other optional equipment will be fitted to the truck. Some of the more interesting options include auxiliary power outlets, protective meshes for the headlights, windshield, and windows, a rear camper shell, search lights, and a 115 liter fuel tank.
