The Japanese can take camping quite seriously. If you’ve ever watched an ASMR camping video by a Japanese content creator, you’ll know what we’re talking about. It’s equally baffling and impressive how they manage to pack what sometimes seems like an entire Daiso store within their mobile setups.
For those whose idea of relaxing is spending time outdoors, Honda has created a special version of its N-Box kei car called the Honda N-Box Joy. The name is spot-on—looking at it does give us joy.

This is strictly a camping vehicle and doesn’t have the capability to go overlanding, but Honda has still redesigned the front end rather extensively to make the N-Box Joy more adventure-oriented. The grille and the intake cutouts here are unique to this variant, and black plastic claddings add to the rugged vibe. Retro-look wheels complete the kei car’s transformation, but if you want more exterior upgrades, you can opt for a grille design that spells out ‘Honda’ instead of using the H badge, and spec some LED foglights onto the lower bumper.

The most important update is found inside. The cargo floor and the rear seatbacks have been decked in tartan upholstery, so when you fold the rear bench down, you get a nice, flat surface called a ‘Furatto Terrace,’ according to Google Translate. We suppose the ‘terrace’ part comes when you’re lounging in there with the rear hatch or the sliding doors are open, allowing you to enjoy the view outside (hopefully, you’ve parked somewhere nice). For some privacy, though, you can put down the tailgate tarp.

The cabin rest of the seats is covered in the same tartan upholstery, which is also waterproof. And if you’re bringing blankets and pillows to make your mobile lounge more comfortable, there are cargo nets to keep everything organized when not in use. Aside from the rear under-floor storage, you also get various roof- and side-mounted utility hooks on which to hang your camping implements.
The more we go on about this, the more we want an N-Box Joy. But the sad thing is this isn’t a model we have on the local market. Would this be a customization you’d do on an HR-V, a CR-V, or even a City Hatch instead?
