It’s official: Isuzu is the first among the Japanese automakers to roll out a mass-market electric midsize pickup. Production for the first-ever D-Max EV has begun, and the first units are expected to be exported before the end of the year.

Following that announcement, full specifications of the Isuzu D-Max EV were also revealed. From battery capacity to power, all important details have been laid down. It’s worth pointing out that all versions of the electric pickup are assembled in Thailand, even for units destined for Europe.

The concept version was shown at the 2024 Bangkok International Motor Show. Now that the production model has been revealed, there are some notable changes on the outside.

The retail version of the Isuzu D-Max EV looks far more conventional than the concept shown last year. It now shares the same grille as the diesel-fed versions, and the same goes for the bumper. The wheels are also straight from the LS-E trim. All in all, this pickup’s electric transformation is subtle from the outside. Only blue highlights on the grille and headlights, along with EV badges on the fenders, are the only giveaway.

As for the cabin it’s identical to the diesel D-Max with little changes made for differentiation. Even the instrument cluster is still a mix of digital and analog displays. Current owners will feel very much at home in it.

Now for the main highlight, the powertrain. The battery-powered D-Max uses dual motors, giving it permanent four-wheel drive. We’re curious if it comes with terrain select modes like the diesels, but Isuzu does claim it has off-road capabilities. Meanwhile, the batteries have a capacity of 66.9kWh.

The two motors put out a combined rating of 189hp, exactly the same as the 3.0-liter diesel. Torque, however, is lower at 325Nm, but we’re expecting a quicker and snappier response due to how EVs deliver power. As for range, Isuzu claims it can get up to 361km on a single charge.

Even though it swapped its diesel for two electric motors, payload and towing capacities are the same as the diesel. The D-Max EV retains its 1,000kg rating for payload, and can still pull up to 3,500kg. Charging takes 10 hours with an AC outlet, and one hour from 20% to 80% with rapid DC chargers. Meanwhile, top speed is capped at 140kph.
