The Lexus LX is known for a lot of things, but being easy on fuel isn’t one of them. Traditionally, it’s had a big, brawny engine loads of power and heaps more torque. Besides, jumbo-sized SUVs need engines that match their size.

Of course, the modern LX has a downsized powertrain. That said, we’re not complaining about the output of its 3.5-liter (actually a 3.4-liter, though) twin-turbo V6. It punches out 409hp and 650Nm, so it’s not underpowered at all. Add to that, it’s more efficient than the 5.7-liter V8 that it replaced. We miss that soundtrack, though.

But we digress, and the real reason we’re bringing up Lexus’ flagship SUV is because there’s a new variant we could expect soon. That would be the electrified LX700h.

Of course, the ‘h’ suffix stands for hybrid, and it’s not a mild one, either. Recently, the LTO published its approval papers, indicating that, at the very least, the LX700h can be sold here. Not only that, we could see two variants offered here.

Per the LTO documents, the LX700h kicks off with the Premier and topped off by the VIP. Sorry folks, no Overtrail edition here, so you’ll have to go for that GX550 if you want a mud-plugging Lexus. Not that it’s a bad thing, mind you.

The LX700h Premier is likely to have the same equipment levels as the non hybrid version, the LX600. That means heaps of leather, wood, and other rich-feeling materials, an advanced infotainment system, slick four-wheel drive modes, air suspension, and more.

As for the VIP, it’s possibly another version of the Ultra Luxury variant sold in the US. If so, the LX loses the second row ‘bench’ and third row seats. In this case, it’s replaced by a pair of captain’s chairs with a massaging function, meaning acres of legroom at the back. It also comes with a rear entertainment system for that business class feeling on the road…or off of it.

Given that it’s a hybrid, we’re expecting better fuel economy in the LX700h compared to the LX600. It will also benefit from the perks provided by EVIDA, one of them being excepted from the number coding scheme. Electrification also gives this LX more power, amping it up to 457hp and, wait for it, 790Nm.

There’s no official word from Lexus Philippines regarding the launch date just yet. But given that the papers are in, it’s only a matter of time.

In the meantime, check out the prices of the current LX.
