The Mazda CX-80 is moving across ASEAN and we’d love to see it here soon

Mazda has been busy expanding its premium crossover lineup these past few years. The most recent addition to that range has been the Mazda CX-80, serving as the bigger brother to the CX-60 and slots just below the CX-90. It’s effectively the successor of the criminally underrated CX-8, and it’s now making its way across several markets in Southeast Asia.

Singapore was the first to get this model in the region as it was launched back in January earlier this year, with Indonesia quickly following suit. Now, it’s Malaysia’s turn to get it, bearing similar specs to the Indonesian version.

That does beg the question: What are the odds of it coming to the Philippines? There’s no hint coming from Mazda Philippines just yet, but we’ll admit we’d like to see it here soon.

For Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia at least, there is only one powertrain choice available, but it’s something that could be of interest to local consumers. That would be a 2.5-liter e-SkyActive plug-in hybrid configuration. With the engine and the electric motor combined, it punches out an impressive 323hp and 500Nm. This setup is only available with all-wheel drive, not that we’re complaining.

Should it be sold in more markets in ASEAN, there’s a good chance it will only come in a six-seater configuration. After all, both Malaysian and Indonesian models are already arranged as such. The middle row consists of a pair of power-operated captain’s chairs with the bonus of one-touch pass-through system. Strangely, however, the Singaporean version comes with seven seats.

It’s worth pointing out that the Mazda CX-80 is nearly five meters long, so it’s just a few millimeters away from being a full-size crossover. The exact dimensions are 4,995 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,710 mm tall. It then rides on a lengthy 3,120 mm wheelbase, so we’re expecting loads of legroom and cargo space in there.

Features-wise, it’s well-equipped. It comes with the latest edition of Mazda’s infotainment software that includes the clever driver’s seat adjuster that can be automatically set for the driver’s height. Advanced driver assists are also present, along with a head-up display. The steering wheel adjustment is done electronically, and we’re glad that it has ventilated seats at the front and rear, a welcome feature that was missing in the CX-80 as that only came with heaters.

As mentioned, it’s yet to be known if the CX-80 will even be considered for the Philippine market. That said, Mazda Philippines does make the extra effort in bringing in the good stuff from around the world. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for this one.
