The year is 1989 and the world of roadsters was to change forever. It was that year that Mazda introduced the first-generation MX-5 to the public and brought back affordable lightweight roadsters from the brink.
In a matter of months, the Mazda MX-5 became a massive hit, not just for enthusiasts but also for the general public. It showed the world that one didn’t need mega bucks and horsepower for driving fun.

35 years have passed since that landmark moment and the MX-5 is going stronger than ever. It still continues to rake in sales for Mazda and has become a global phenomenon. With that in mind, Mazda has something special lined up for its 35th birthday.
Mazda Miata program manager Shigeki Saito has confirmed that they will build a 35th Anniversary Edition of the iconic sports car. He announced it during the Karuizawa Meeting 2024, much to the excitement of the attendees.

That said, he didn’t say much about the future special edition. However, he did mention that it will not be a limited-run model unlike the 30th Anniversary Edition. For those who recall, the 30th Anniversary Edition was limited to just 3,000 units worldwide and only came in Racing Orange.
While it won’t be as exclusive, we bet that Mazda won’t make the 35th Anniversary Edition any less special. After all, it’s a milestone moment for the roadster and we’re almost certain it’ll be more than just an upbadged variant.

If we were to base it on past Anniversary Editions, the 35th is likely to get a special interior treatment. As to what exactly is still up in the air, but it’s a certainty at this point. We can also expect a few chassis tweaks along the way, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a few more horses under the hood.
As for the exact launch date, it’s still up in the air. But given that this is the year to debut it, it’s safe to say that it’ll be sooner than later.
