The latest generations of the Mini Cooper hatchback and the Mini Countryman crossover are now in the country, and for the first time in the local market, the British brand is offering these models with all-electric powertrains. Their gasoline-powered versions are available, too, in the new lineup.

Let’s take a look at the new additions to the local range.
All-new Mini Cooper

For the fourth generation of Mini’s iconic hatchback under the BMW Group, ‘Cooper’ has been adopted as the official name of the model instead of a variant designation. Only the three-door body style is available at launch. Let’s start first with available trim levels and pricing:

- Mini Cooper SE (electric) – P3,300,000
While both are essentially considered fourth-generation models and follow the ‘Charismatic Simplicity’ design language, these two variants are based on different platforms—take note of the differences in the hood panels and the door handles.

The electric Cooper is based on the J01 platform, which was co-developed by BMW and Great Wall Motor under their joint venture company Spotlight Automotive. It’s manufactured in China, which partly explains why the Cooper SE (note that it wears just ‘S’ variant badges on the outside) has a considerably lower price than the gas-powered version. Tax incentives for EVs help bring down the pricing, too.


The Cooper SE is powered by a 215hp electric motor that produces 330Nm of torque. Claimed range from the 54.2kWh battery is around 377-401km. It may be fast-charged up to 95kW to top up the battery from 10% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes.
The three-door F66 Cooper S, meanwhile, is still based on third-generation model and packs a 2.0-liter turbopetrol engine that makes 204hp and 300Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.


A key feature of the all-new Cooper is the Experience Modes that may be accessed via a selector knob below the ginormous circular OLED touchscreen (which runs on the latest Mini Operating System 9) at the center of the dashboard. There are seven ‘experiences’ in total, and they alter the theme and design of the multimedia interface, the lighting, and, in some modes, the driving dynamics. If you want the zippy character the brand is known for, you’ll want Go-Kart Mode, of course.
While there are physical buttons and switches on the center console and the steering wheel, a proper test drive of the car will show how often you’ll need to go into the touchscreen to access common vehicle settings. That said, the ‘Hey Mini’ intelligent personal assistant will let you control navigation, call, and entertainment functions through voice command.
All-new Mini Countryman

This third generation of this not-so-mini crossover sits on the same UKL2 platform as the BMW X1. As opposed to the Cooper, the Countryman’s electric and gasoline-powered versions were developed alongside each other by the BMW Group.

The electric Countryman SE is powered by a 313hp electric motor that produces 494Nm of torque, propelling the crossover to a top speed of 180kph. Range is up to 433km with the 64.7kWh battery fully charged.

The 2.0-liter turbopetrol straight-four engine of the Countryman S makes 214hp and 360Nm of torque, channeled to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. On both variants, the All4 all-wheel drivetrain electronically manages power distribution depending on real-time road and weather conditions.
The Countryman also offers the same Experience Modes as the Cooper. Inside, the cabin aesthetic is very similar to that of its hatchback counterpart, too, with the circular OLED infotainment interface, fabric dashtop, and minimalist switchgear. A heads-up display also gives a quick view of relevant driving information.
