The arrival of the next-generation Nissan Patrol has been a long time coming. Following the teaser of its more luxurious twin, the Infiniti QX80, we can’t help but think the redesigned Patrol’s debut is just around the corner.
For the Infiniti version, its world premiere is slated for March 20, 2024. It’s not that long of a wait anymore, but Nissan’s luxury division did spill a few juicy details about it.

In this case, the company has shared a few things about its engine. While it’s long been reported that it will no longer use a V8, there’s now official confirmation from Infiniti. There’s also a very strong chance that it will be the same mill that will power the Nissan Patrol.
Infiniti has shown the engine of the QX80, while recent spy shots from the US show that the top cover appears identical. With Infiniti confirming a 3.5-liter twin-turbo for the QX80, we can expect the Patrol to have the same engine under the hood. For those asking about diesel power, it seems unlikely for this generation.
Now, for the juicy details. Per the company, the new 3.5-liter twin-turbo makes much more power and torque over the outgoing V8. Packing 450hp and 700Nm of torque, that’s an improvement of 50hp and 140Nm of torque. But it’s the engine code that caught our attention. Known as the VR35DDT, it appears to have a connection to another VR-powered Nissan, the GT-R.

While we’ll miss the V8 growl of the present Patrol, we welcome the extra power and torque. Its downsized engine and nine-speed automatic transmission should help curb fuel consumption for greater range.
Other things to note about the next-gen Nissan Patrol and Infiniti QX80? The company says it's larger than ever, riding on an all-new chassis with a stronger frame. It will also be available with electronically-controlled air suspension and dampers aimed at delivering a smoother and more serene ride. Lastly, we saw a fully digital instrument panel during the teaser, and it's possible that the Patrol might get it, too.
