When the Porsche Cayenne first came out in 2002, it’s safe to say it caused a massive stir among the brand’s purist fanbase. Yet, over 20 years later, the company’s first SUV is still going strong today, raking in cash for Stuttgart.

If anything, Porsche’s gamble paid off massively, further expanding the brand’s lineup while making its definitive model, the 911, stronger than ever. Now, it seems that the company is dipping its toes in uncharted waters yet again.

For its next SUV act, the company plans to aim even higher up the segment. In a recent press conference, the manufacturer said, “Porsche is also planning to expand its product portfolio upwards – with an all-electric SUV, sportily positioned above the Cayenne.

To oversimplify, Porsche would like to make an electric SUV that’s even bigger than the Cayenne. Should that plan come into fruition, the company will have three high-riding vehicles in its portfolio. Its potential rivals include the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

“This completely new car concept is based on the SSP Sport platform developed by Porsche and is to be built in Leipzig. Its powerful performance, automated driving functions and a completely new interior experience are intended to tap into new customer potential – particularly in the US and China,” added Porsche.

With that, Porsche might even go all out by making it a three-row, seven seat model. Automotive News Europe reports that it’s a strong possibility with one of the sources it cited saying it will be ‘un-Porsche-like’ and ‘have a flat rear design.’

While specific details are still unknown, it seems that the company is going full steam ahead with the plan. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume sound confident with the full-sized SUV plan, saying ‘We will be able to generate good margins there, and we will also be [able] to express Porsche's exclusivity well.’

Bold words, indeed.
