The Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) is getting ready for its flag off this year Last year was an interesting run as the race saw a new brand at the top of the podium. After two years of domination, Toyota managed to knock off Mitsubishi off its perch.
Of course, Mitsubishi won’t take that sitting down and have prepped the all-new Triton to reclaim its title. At the same time, Toyota will make it difficult for Mitsubishi as it has just unveiled its entry for AXCR 2025.

Instead of using a mix of Fortune’s and Hiluxes, Toyota Gazoo Racing Thailand has opted to go for a full Hilux fleet for this year’s race. Not only that, the trucks that will be racing are the top-dog GR-S models, wide fenders and all.
The field of Toyota Hilux GR-S models that will run the rally are classified under Group T1. Group T1 rules allow for mild modifications for the vehicle but require that the engine remain untouched. Like last year’s pickup, we’re expecting updates and upgrades under the chassis to cope with the demands of the tough rally stages.

There are also few lightweight mods along the way. There’s the stripped out interior, a lighter tailgate, and of course, the addition of a roll cage. On the race truck, we also see a snorkel and beefier under chassis protection.
It might not be the newest model in its segment, but the Toyota Hilux does have one trick up its sleeve for this competition. As it’s now based on the GR-S model, it’s likely that the rally truck packs the uprated version of the familiar 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine. Internally known as the 1GD-FTV, it produces 221hp and 550Nm of torque, putting it at the top of its segment.

This year’s AXCR will be an interesting one. There are two manufacturers who, quite badly, want to claim the title. Either way, it will be an epic match between Toyota and Mitsubishi, and we’re looking forward to the day Ralliart and Gazoo Racing face off on the mud.
