For the last couple of years, Toyota has been on a crossover and SUV launching spree. Within the last five years, we’ve need all-new generations of its four-wheel drives, along with its Lexus counterparts.

But if there’s one model that’s been hotly anticipated, it’s the so-called Land Cruiser Mini. Even though it doesn’t have an official name yet, Toyota has made it semi-official and even previewed the model during the launch of the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Several reports have been made out this particular model, but the latest updates from Japan and Australia seem to be a significant one. Japanese publication BestCar says it has major leaked details about the SUV, while Australia’s Drive reckons it has a name already. Let’s break those down one by one.

BestCar’s latest scoop claims the chassis that will be used for the SUV. Its latest report says that it will use the new IMV-0 platform, the same one utilized in the Toyota Tamaraw/Hilux Champ. The publication added that it will likely be larger than the five-door Suzuki Jimny.

For the engine, the 2.7-liter Dual VVT-i gas engine seems to be the most likely candidate, at least for the Japanese market. Given that the IMV-0 can accommodate diesel power, we wouldn’t be surprised if that option will become available eventually.

Moving to Australia, Drive recently found documents suggesting that the mini 4x4 will be called the Land Cruiser FJ. It was initially claimed by BestCar, but the Australians have found supporting documents to the possible name from Japan. That said, it might not be the final name, but it could also be a strong candidate.

As for the launch date, there is no official word from Toyota just yet. However, reports from Japan claim that it might make its debut as early as December 2024.
