Honda Civic Type R at Nurburgring

Last week, we told you about the public debut of the all-new Honda Civic Type R. Now, we're sharing with you a video of the car lapping the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in seven minutes, 50.63 seconds, supposedly making it the fastest front-wheel-drive car to ever conquer the nearly 21km track.

According to Honda, the lap time was achieved during the car's development test on the legendary track in May 2014 with an unidentified driver behind the wheel. The lap time reportedly eclipses the previously acknowledged record for front-wheel-drive cars of seven minutes and 54.36 seconds set by a Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R driven by Renault Sport factory driver Laurent Hurgon.

The Japanese carmaker also clarified that the car used in the test lacked air-conditioning, front passenger seat, and audio equipment--although this was offset by the addition of a full roll cage "installed specifically for safety reasons and not to add rigidity." Honda confirmed that it plans to drive a production-model Civic Type R around the Nurburgring Nordschleife later this year in hopes of setting a new lap record for a front-wheel-drive production car.

Watch the record-setting lap of the "contracted pro test driver" from inside the Civic Type R.
