Present at the launch were Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala and Mariana Beatriz Zobel de Ayala, who both drove a Golf GTI to the front of the showroom for the official unveil. Also present was Volkswagen Philippines president and CEO JP Orbeta.
Rather than just the usual ceremony of taking the covers off the car, Volkswagen Philippines did something different and more deserving of the Original Hot Hatch. The stretch of 28th Street was closed for the evening for the slalom course, where members of the motoring media were invited to participate in an acceleration and braking test.
Journalists and Volkswagen employees took turns sampling the performance of the Golf GTI in its traditional colors of Oryx White Pearl, Deep Black Pearl and Tornado Red.
Our first impressions? The hot hatch is quick off the line with the "brat-bap" adding to the aural experience upon shifting. The car can accelerate to 100kph in 6.7 seconds. The Golf GTI also has a short braking distance and is nimble around the slalom course with properly weighted steering. We enjoyed driving it so much that we went back a few more times.
For those who have been fans of this hot hatch (like us), it was a nostalgic feeling. After all, the Golf GTI is just as big as the Volkswagen brand itself, and it's this car that we have been anticipating the most to finally hit our market.
If you want to know more about the Golf GTI, watch out for a full feature in our April 2015 issue.
