"We have chosen Fisichella because we can expect him to make a valuable contribution in this final part of the season," Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.
Fisichella's Formula One career started in 1996 with eight races for Minardi. He became a test driver of the Ferrari team on the same year. Fisichella also raced for teams like Benetton and Renault.
Fisichella has been with Force India since 2008. He scored his first podium points of the season when he finished second at the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend.
"Giancarlo has shown, throughout his long career, that he is fast and competitive and we are therefore proud to be able to run an Italian driver in our home race," Domenicali said.
Fisichella will start racing for Ferrari on the Italian Grand Prix from September 11 to 13.
"I'm in seventh heaven. I still can't believe it that the dream of my life comes true," Fisichella said in a statement on Ferrari.com .
The Ferrari team thanked Luca Badoer who stood in for Massa in the last two races. Massa incurred a head injury during a qualification round at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Force India has yet to reveal who will take Fisichella's place in the team.
