During a recent trip to Sichuan Province in China, we got a chance to see BYD’s Flash Chargers up close. For those unfamiliar with the brand’s Flash Charging technology, these T-shaped structures provide EV charging at a rapid pace—around 9.7% charge per minute. According to BYD Philippines’ Adam Hu, these chargers are expected to arrive on our shores by 2027.
The BYD Flash Chargers were first launched in China this year, with global rollouts expected for next year. The brand states that it can achieve charging times from 10% to 70% in only five minutes, and 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. During a live demonstration, the charging connector was plugged into a Denza Z9 GT, and while charging, a cup of pour-over coffee was being made on the side. The coffee was served in a cup just before the Z9’s battery topped off, achieving 97% from 33% in just seven minutes.
What cars can use these chargers, you ask? Technically, anything with a CCS2 DC charging port can top up at these stations, but the Flash Charging feature is specific to cars with second-generation BYD Blade Batteries. In the Philippines, there are currently no cars equipped with the Blade Battery 2.0. However, the Denza Z9 GT and BYD Ti 7, which are both expected to come to the Philippines, are equipped with these batteries. The rest of the CCS2-equipped vehicles can charge at these stations but are limited to their maximum charging speed.

Even though most cars can’t take advantage of Flash Charging right now, it’s still a good thing that the infrastructure will be available. BYD and Denza’s future models will certainly feature Blade Battery 2.0 and later versions, so it shouldn’t be long before more consumers can use these ultra-fast chargers for their EVs.
