Some of you are probably sick of hearing praises for BYD by now. The thing is, the hype isn’t just here. Over in Japan, one of its cars just won a highly coveted award. Yes, you read that right.
Ladies and gentlemen, the BYD Seal has just won the Japan EV of the Year, making it two in a row for the Chinese automaker. Just the year before, the smaller Dolphin bagged the same award.

“[The] BYD Seal EV has won unanimous praise from public voting to industry voting for its extremely beautiful design style and comprehensive performance. It not only demonstrates the excellent performance of pure electric models but also sets an industry benchmark with its high-quality driving experience,” said EV Smart, the organizer of Japan EV of the Year.
The Seal has been making a good impression in Japan since it was launched there last year. So much so that it was actually a finalist in the Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) awards, being part of the ten best models launched in 2024. It ultimately finished in eighth, ahead of the Volvo EX30 and Mitsubishi Triton. The Seal was also the third best EV according to JCOTY, finishing behind the Ioniq 5 N and Mini Cooper electric.
What about the other cars that made the top three? Second place went to the Honda N-Van e: with 182 points. Third, meanwhile, went to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, our choice for EV of the year with 176 points. For reference, the Seal grabbed 195 points – a close fight.
