High demand for Peugeot 308 prompts French carmaker to hire additional workers

Fresh from being crowned the 2014 European Car of the Year at the recently concluded Geneva Motor Show, the second-generation Peugeot 308 is quickly becoming one of the French carmaker's most popular models.

The new 308 has had 60,000 orders placed since its launch in October. Due to the high demand and the addition of the newly launched 308 SW (station wagon) model, PSA Peugeot Citroen will increase output at their Sochaux plant in France by adding a night shift starting this June.

PSA will hire 600 workers, which will include 450 on temporary contracts. The additional night shift will boost the daily output of the car to 1,563 units.

The second-generation 308 rides on PSA's new EMP2 modular platform, which allows it to have compact dimensions and lower weight compared to the previous-generation model. It competes with other cars in the C-segment like the Ford Focus, the Volkswagen Golf and the Opel/ Vauxhall Astra. It's offered in two body styles: hatchback and station wagon.

The 308 is currently not part of Peugeot Philippines' local range, but we do hope this intruiging model will reach our shores in the near future. Do you guys want this car, too?
