Things might be looking up for Toyota when it comes to the recent certification issue. While it’s still a long way from sorting everything out, another country has stated that the Toyota diesels it sells are unaffected by the matter.

Following Toyota Motor Philippines’ statement, Toyota Indonesia has echoed the same sentiments. To simplify, models sold over there are also cleared from the issue.

Per Anton Jimmy Suwandi,  Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), he explained that the problem is rooted in a procedural error. The issue stems from horsepower certification tests although it is unknown if the outputs are overrated or underrated.

Translated from Bahasa, Suwandi said, “Some reports misinterpreted it, saying this is included in TMC. (TICO, Toyota Industries Corporation) This is the supplier. So, Toyota outsourced several developments and preparations, including homologation or certification preparations to this company".

"One of them, is the diesel engine. Production at TMMIN (Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia) is still running, sales are still running, delivery is also running. So, nothing has been stopped because there is no connection with TICO,” added Suwandi.

On top of that, TMMIN President Director Bob Azam added that the engines affected by the horsepower certification issue are mainly intended for European, Middle Eastern, and select Asian markets. It appears to imply that the 1GD and 2GD engines for Indonesia are also marked safe in Indonesia. This engine is fitted to models such as the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova, as well as the Hiace and Land Cruiser Prado.

With that, two Southeast Asian countries have stated that the Toyota diesel engines offered in their respective territories. Again, this will all depend on local regulations, and only time will tell if the rest of the region will release similar statements.
