McLaren Automotive and TAG Heuer have come up with a unique and limited edition watch to go with the British carmaker's all-new MP4-12C road car--26 years after the McLaren Formula 1 team tapped the watchmaker as a major sponsor and 20 years after it launched the legendary McLaren F1 road car.
Known as the TAG Heuer MP4-12C Chronograph, it effectively serves as a symbol of both companies' innovative, high-performance and precision manufacturing principles.
The TAG Heuer MP4-12C Chronograph matches its characteristics with the unique color, materials, and design of the new MP4-12C road car. The watch's carbon dial is inspired by the car's carbon fiber monocell, for instance, while the alcantara leather strap was inspired by the car's interior materials. The orange superluminescent markers on the hands and the orange stitching of the bracelet also reflect McLaren's historic and traditional road and racing car color while McLaren's speed mark logo caps the watch's crown.
Other features of the MP4-12C Chronograph are the watch's movement which is visible behind the face through the dial's sapphire inserts and the Flyback function which is useful to pilots and track drivers as it allows the chronograph to be reset to zero and immediately restarted simply by pressing the push button once.
"I love watches and have always wanted to design one myself," said McLaren Automotive design director Frank Stephenson. "The TAG Heuer MP4-12C Chronograph was a particularly interesting project as we have combined our passion for precision technology, engineering and performance and included some of the most outstanding design features and materials that can be found in the MP4-12C."
Only 1,000 TAG Heuer MP4-12C Chronograph units will be produced and all will be exclusively available only through McLaren later this year.
