The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that as of January 19, 2026, all 13 MRT-3 stations now feature walkthrough metal detectors. These were initially seen at the North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, and GMA-Kamuning stations on January 7, where they were first used and tested.
Ideally, these new metal detectors should speed up foot traffic at the station while collecting valuable data regarding the train’s ridership. From the images and videos shared, it looks like the detectors count each commuter that passes through and record the number of alarms raised.

It can also approximate where a metallic object might be on someone’s person, and identify what it might be—it’s been seen to recognize smartphones. The detectors feature CCTV cameras that capture the commuter’s face upon stepping into the gate.

Since 2025, the DOTr has launched a number of initiatives to modernize the MRT-3 train system. It started by extending the train’s operating hours and adding NFC-enabled turnstiles for direct GCash, credit card, and debit card payments.

Free Wi-Fi was also installed at all stations in July 2025 to help commuters access their GCash Commuter QR codes or top up their Beep cards.
Looking ahead, the MRT-3 is now expected to adopt the new Accessible Travel Policy, which ensures that the train line is sensitive to the needs of all commuters. Right away, this would mean improved wheelchair and mobility infrastructure and gender awareness training for the train staff.
