BYD Cars Philippines is ending its busy year on an even higher note with the recent launch of the all-new BYD Seal 5 DM-i.

We were able to try out the hybrid sedan prior to the launch, and I myself had high praises for it. I even went so far as saying it could be BYD’s next big thing in our market. With an impressive electrified powertrain and a starting price of under a million pesos, who wouldn’t expect this to sell well? Especially considering the success of its bigger sibling in the Sealion 6 DM-i.

Despite the subcompact-sedan pricing, the Seal 5 DM-i is as big as compact sedans. Heck, it’s even bigger than the Toyota Corolla Altis.

There’s also a lot of power to back up that physique. Under the hood—which is probably the most important part of this car—is a setup utilizing BYD’s Super DM-i technology, combining an electric motor with a range extender. You can gas it up or plug it in for pure electric driving, you do you.

The system is mated to an 8.3kWh battery in the Dynamic variant, producing 177hp and 316Nm of torque and promising a maximum extended range of 1,175km. The Premium trim, meanwhile, gets an 18.3kWh battery, produces 194hp and 325Nm, and does 1,240km with a full tank of gas and a full charge.

Anyway, that’s it for the numbers. Instead, we’ll leave you with the full video so you can hear more of my insights and see more of the car. For those who want to read more, you can click on these blue words.
