The GT40 is arguably one of the most iconic Ford nameplates ever. It’s one of the biggest reasons why secondhand GT40s in the market don’t come cheap. Well, that’s if you do manage to find one in good running condition.
That’s why it comes as no surprise that when moviemakers resort to using replicas instead of buying the real thing. The Oscar-winning film Ford v Ferrari, for example, used six GT40 replicas throughout production—one of which is going under the hammer in September via Mecum Auctions.
The GT40s used in the film were built by Race Car Replicas (RCR). The one going up for bids was named the No. 3 car used in the 24 Hours of Le Mans scene and the No. 88 William Wonder in the 24 Hours of Daytona scene. It is also the only one among the bunch that has a VIN and a title, meaning it’s the only road-legal replica in the lineup.
And while it’s merely a replica, this GT40 is no slouch. It’s built to 1966 Ford GT40 specifications, so under its hood is a 5.7-liter V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It’ll also come with a signed movie poster and movie car documentation upon purchase. Nice.
You can say that this one’s not exactly a legitimate automotive artifact, but as far as movie memorabilia go, it’s still a wicked cool piece in itself—and one you can drive around town without worries at that. Given the money, would you place a bid on this one?
