The Civic EG hatchback from the early- to mid-’90s has become a legend despite being Honda Cars Philippines’ entry into the People’s Car Program. The local version of the three-door variant only came with a 1.2-liter engine, but this also became a blank canvas for car enthusiasts who wanted to build a hot hatch.

One day, I was thinking: What would a Civic EG hatchback look like if it were given the boutique restomod treatment? Think Singer Vehicle Design, but with the humbler clamshell hatch Civic as the base vehicle.

The idea is to make the vehicle look integrated and avoid the collection-of-bolted-on-aftermarket-parts-look. Up front, it features bi-LED headlights, an upgrade over the original halogen units. I gave it a slightly larger, more aggressive main intake flanked by functional vertical air curtains. At the bottom, it has a custom front splitter. Moving to the sides, it has 31mm wider front and rear wheel arch flares. The front fenders are GRP, while the rear ones are welded steel units. The side skirts are now body colored and reshaped to match the flares.

The rear bumper mirrors the design language of the front; in this case, the vertical corner slits are vents for the air trapped in the rear wheel wells. The taillights have been upgraded to custom LED units. The single fog light is mounted in a central position. A small Gurney flap is attached to the rear spoiler. For under body aero it comes equipped with a custom front belly pan and a rear diffuser. One of the highlights of this virtual restomod is the wheel and tire package. I gave it 2002 NSX-style 17- inch MITA 02 alloy wheels, shod with 215/40 R17 rubber. For those curious, the OEM wheels on the NSX were manufactured by BBS.

What’s under the hood? It’s powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated K20 engine that puts out around 225hp and 215Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. The exhaust system is patterned after the Type R and ends with a Spoon Street Type silencer. It has 50mm wider tracks with a JDM Integra Type R-based custom front suspension. The geometry and spring rates are adjusted to compensate for the 0.75-inch lower ride height. The upgraded brake system features StopTech calipers.

As we hop inside, you will see the classic Momo Tuner steering wheel with an “H” horn button and red Recaro SR-3 seats. The rear seats can be specified with red inserts to match the front seats. The upgraded gauges get gray dials with orange needles and a light metallic gray cluster mask. The shifter has a satin silver knob and an Alcantara boot with red stitching. It has a single-DIN Pioneer DEH-80PRS as its basic head unit option.
