The most memorable car isn’t always the oldest or the prettiest. It’s one thing I wrote about when I was still new at Top Gear Philippines, and it still rings true on so many occasions.
Take NBA superstar Karl-Anthony Towns, for example. While my status in life is nowhere near that of the New York Knicks center, that statement applies to both of us. See, KAT—as he is also commonly called—recently celebrated his 30th birthday, and his girlfriend Jordyn Woods got him a very meaningful gift: the exact same family car he grew up with.
In their social media posts, both Woods and Towns shared photos of what appeared to be a young KAT standing on top of the hood of an SUV. He was being held by his mother, the late Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, whom KAT lost to COVID-19 during the pandemic. According to Google, the vehicle in the photo is an Isuzu Trooper. While we couldn’t see the vehicle properly from any of the photos circulating online, the story was clear: This was more than just a car.

In her Instagram post, Woods shared: “During the summer Karl asked me if I could drive any car for a day, which one would it be..I answered, and his response was ‘I wouldn’t pick anything crazy, I just really loved my mom’s car she had when I was a kid.’ So I went on a mission these past months to find the car, shipped it across the country, got it fixed up, and was able to surprise him with it today for his 30th!”
That’s one way to celebrate a milestone in life. Towns is personally one of my favorite NBA players—he’s one of the most electric and versatile centers in the game right now. Whether or not he’ll go down as one of the all-time greats (it’s highly likely), what we know for certain is that he remains one of the most humble superstars in one of the biggest markets for basketball. He’s not known to be a car guy—unlike other NBA stars, you’ll rarely see him flashing such wealth—but we’re 100% sure he’s happy with this gift.
