Damn. We know getting a license plate number that’s to your liking is a big deal—but is it really worth spending a premium on?
Let us clarify, first. When we say premium in this case, we aren’t referring to a couple of extra bucks in registration fees or requirements at your local transportation office. Someone in the Middle East recently dropped 35 million United Arab Emirates dirham for plate number AA8 at an auction. Converted to Philippine pesos, that’s a jaw-dropping P499 million.

License plate number auction for AA8:
Granted, this wasn’t any regular license plate. The number was auctioned off during a Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Most Noble Numbers event to support the organization’s billion-meal food drive.
In total, the organization was able to collect 53 million AED dirham (over P750 million) through the event in just two hours. Plate number AA8 was by far the biggest purchase. Frankly, this buy makes the P180 million ambulance in Dubai look tame.
Ah, nothing to remind us of our place on the motoring totem pole like a couple of billionaires throwing entire dream garages’ worth of money at a bunch of plate numbers. Think there’s anyone in the Philippines willing to spend this much just to escape the number coding scheme?
