Enthusiasts modify their cars for different reasons. Some do it for the art and passion, others do it out of necessity, and a few do it just because.
There are some, however, that do mods to push their limits as mechanics and tuners as well as that of the cars they’re playing around with. Mighty Car Mods is a prime example of that, and the guys from that popular YouTube channel once again did something quite cool: a sleeper Toyota Hilux.

Sleeper because on the outside, it looks like a neatly restored retro truck that could potentially grab trophies at a car show, while under the hood and under that chassis, it has the makings of a high-performance pickup that can rip through any race track. Its looks are nowhere near as bonkers as what it can do.

This single-cab Hilux is a fourth-generation model, and its insides have been swapped out for a 2.7-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. If that sounds familiar, it’s the same 2TR-FE four-pot that we used to have in the Fortuner here in the market, only here it’s been turbocharged. There’s a front-mounted intercooler with custom piping, as well as a Subaru pedal that enables drive-by-wire. Other custom bits here include the rear differential, the exhaust system, and the engine mounts, which allow the large modern engine to fit inside the hood of this smaller vintage pickup.

The inside has been kept mostly stock, but they’ve added sound deadening, which, along with the new suspension and bushings underneath, greatly improves the ride quality. There’s a lot more technical stuff you can geek out on, but we’ll leave it to you to watch the full video and learn more about this truck. What you need to know is that this thing sounds insane—just listen to that turbo and that exhaust—and can drift like crazy. It’s probably one of the most fun retro trucks we’ve seen on the Internet.
