After months of rumors and a single design patent image that gave us a preview of the final design, Toyota finally unveiled its much-anticipated Land Cruiser FJ in Japan on October 21. For this size comparison, we’ll be pitting the Japanese carmaker’s new compact boxy off-roader against its IMV SUV sibling, the Fortuner.

The Land Cruiser FJ measures 4,575mm long, 1,855mm wide, and 1,960mm tall, making it 220mm shorter, as wide, and 125mm taller than the popular Fortuner. For those curious, the new FJ’s overall length includes the full-size external spare tire. Toyota’s new compact 4x4 rides on a 2,580mm wheelbase, which makes it 170mm shorter between the axles than its three-row SUV platform-mate. The Land Cruiser FJ and Fortuner LTD in the photo share the same 30.5-inch-diameter 265/60 R18 tire size. While Toyota has not disclosed the ground clearance of its compact 4x4, it is likely similar or close to the Fortuner's 225mm figure.

The bonus comparos: The Land Cruiser FJ is 90mm shorter, 50mm narrower, and 130mm taller than the FJ Cruiser. Toyota’s new compact 4x4 rides on a 110mm shorter wheelbase compared to the old FJ. When compared to the Corolla Cross, the Land Cruiser FJ is 115mm longer, 30mm wider, and 340mm taller. Its wheelbase is 60mm shorter than the compact Toyota crossover’s. While the Land Cruiser FJ’s bumper-to-bumper measurement is still unknown, it is likely shorter than the Corolla Cross since more than half of its 265mm-wide spare tire extends beyond the rear bumper.

Here's a quick refresher of the Land Cruiser FJ. Toyota’s new compact, two-row, body-on-frame off-roader is built on the Japanese carmaker’s IMV architecture. Its suspension design is pretty much the same as the Fortuner’s. This means it has a double-wishbone front suspension and a coil-sprung solid rear axle at the rear. Due to the short rear overhang—which improves the vehicle’s departure angle—the spare tire has been relocated to its side-hinged fifth door. At launch, the only confirmed engine for the new FJ is the 161hp 2.7-liter 2TR-FE in-line-four gas mill, a powerplant once offered as an option in the local-spec Fortuner G.

The official pricing for the new Land Cruiser FJ has not yet been revealed. My guess is when it lands here, it could slot in the same position as the discontinued FJ Cruiser, which was usually priced below the Fortuner LTD variants. Let’s hope Toyota gives its new Land Cruiser FJ an attractive price.
