We’ll make one thing very clear: Cars are not an asset. They depreciate, and you have to spend to keep them running. That said, there are some shining examples out there that buck the norm.

Of course, it helps if a car reaches legendary and/or iconic status to keep values up. Case in point, almost all Japanese performance cars from the ‘90s are now exchanging hands for far more than their original SRP. Yes, inflation included.

That brings us neatly to this pristine 1994 Mk4 Toyota Supra. In case you missed the headline, it sold for nearly P8-M. Sold via Bring a Trailer auctions, the winning bid was $142,000, or P7,938,000 at current exchange rates. For reference, a top of the line Supra in the US retailed for $45,200 in 1994. This example was purchased for $48,845 thanks to a few options thrown in. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $106,000 in today’s money.

Safe to say the seller made good bank on this particular one. Even if you factor in any possible restoration work, there’s still a good chunk of change left. But what made this Supra special? After all, most examples go for around $40,000 to $60,000 in the US.

This 1994 Toyota Supra finished in Renaissance Red is of the rarer Sport Roof 6-Speed. It’s the same kind used in the first Fast and Furious movie, so there’s star power behind it. The low mileage also helped, clocking in just under 60,000kms in 31 years. Of course, it has the legendary 2JZ-GTE, a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-six that made 320hp and 427Nm.

The recently sold car appears to be in great condition, but even the seller admitted that it’s not immaculate. There are a few bits of touch up paint on the body, so this car was well driven at some point in its life. But still, a not-so-perfect example getting sold for that much shows just how insane the ‘90s enthusiast car market has become.

And here’s the thing: This isn’t even the most expensive bone-stock Supra sold, at least through Bring a Trailer. Back in 2022, a model similar to this with lower miles and in near brand new condition went under the hammer for, wait for it, $232,000. That’s nearly P13-M when converted to local currency.

Why would anyone pay that much for a 31-year old used car? Well, the Mk4 Toyota Supra is a special car, and for those who can, the joy of finally owning one makes it totally worth it. Sure, there are faster cars for much less these days, but do all those cars have soul? Exactly.
