The Toyota Wigo goes by many names. Its true origins lie in the Daihatsu Ayla, but it’s also known as the Toyota Agya, and the Malaysian market even has its own version called the Perodua Axia. But regardless of the badge on the tailgate, they’re all the same Daihatsu-based small hatchback.

We bring this up because there’s a rather interesting one-off being displayed at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto at the moment. It’s called the Daihatsu Ayla Retro Future Concept, and it shows one of the more amusing aftermarket possibilities for the popular Wigo.

The retro vibe starts with a vibrant white on teal two-tone paint scheme. There’s also intricate pinstriping on the hood to go along with it. The front wheels get a turbofan design, while rears get a five-spoke look. And yes, it says ‘Turbo Bastard’ on the front wheels.

Of course, the most obvious change was made to the front end of the Ayla. There’s a longer hood, along with a bespoke bumper design. Its headlights have been replaced by round units to mimic cars from days gone by. At the back, the concept comes with round tail lights and turn signals, another nod to the past.

Inside, the dashboard will be familiar to current-get Toyota Wigo owners. Still, the throwback touches were applied in there. The seats are now trimmed in teal leather, along with a few brown highlights. And yes, there’s more teal on the door panels to liven up the cabin.

One interesting mod is the addition of air suspension. As evidenced by the tank in the trunk that effectively leaving the small hatchback with even less cargo space, it allows the car to sit even lower to the ground. Well, some things have to be sacrificed for the sake of style.

But what’s unchanged is under the hood. Like the Philippine-spec Wigo, the Ayla is powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine. It’s good for 67hp and 91Nm, so it’s obviously no hot rod. In the case of this one-off, it then shifts with a five-speed manual.
