We at Top Gear Philippines rather enjoyed our time with the Toyota Hilux GR-S. It’s a true challenger to the popular Ford Ranger Raptor, and it packs a whopper under the hood too.
That said, some folks might find it a little too extreme. So, for those who like a bit of the GR-S but sans the overtly sporty stuff, the updated Hilux Conquest might be worth checking out.

Yes, Toyota silently updated the second-highest trim level of the Hilux. Turns out, it was done around the same time as the GR-S was released, but a recent Facebook post on Toyota Motor Philippines’ page showed the real deal. So, what’s new?
Most obvious are the chunkier fender flares. Yes, you can get those meaty flares without going for the full GR-S variant. But that’s not just done for cosmetics, either. Underneath, it gets a wider suspension track to go along with it. That should help in handling on and off the road. Tighter trails might be a bit of a challenge, though.

Awesome stuff, right? Well, there’s a catch. The wider Conquest only comes in 4x4 guises. Opt for the 4x2 and it sticks to the slimmer fender flares. That said, it does further differentiate the four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive variants further. So, if you see any of these wide-bodied Hilux Conquests on the road, you’ll know it’s the 4x4.
There are new things on the inside, too. For starters, there’s a new 9-inch display audio system, a much needed upgrade. It also integrates wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for added convenience. Toyota Safety Sense is, of course, standard. It just doesn’t include lane-keeping assist as the Hilux still uses a hydraulic steering rack.

What the new Conquest doesn’t get is the GR-S engine tune. While it still uses the same 2.8-liter turbodiesel mill, it doesn’t put out the full 221hp and 550Nm. Instead, its power is retained at 201hp and 500Nm of torque. Three-pedal enthusiasts will be glad to know a six-speed manual is still available.
