BYD’s Flash Chargers are set to roll out across Europe in 2027, and the all-new Atto 8 will be the brand’s first compatible vehicle. In the Philippines, we are expecting these ultra-fast chargers in 2027 as well, but the Denza Z9 GT will be the only locally available car to reap all of its benefits.

What exactly are those benefits? “Ready in 5, full in 9, cold add 3,” according to BYD. More specifically, the Chinese carmaker says that a sufficient amount of power can be supplied in five minutes, while a full charge can be completed in just nine. And in severely cold weather, drivers will only need to wait an additional three minutes for a full charge—though we won’t have to worry about that.

If you want to read how the Z9 GT fared with BYD’s Flash Charger, you can read staff writer Lije Martin’s account here. In the case of the new (and likely more affordable) Atto 8, its 115kWh battery powers up from 10-70% in just five minutes, and then 97% is achieved in nine minutes.

With a fully charged battery, the rear-wheel drive Atto 8 has a driving range of 652km, while its all-wheel drive version is rated for 602km. Both fit into a form factor that is 5,040mm long, 1,996mm wide, and 1,760mm tall, with seven seats to go around.

In terms of power, the RWD Atto 8 gets a single-motor setup, with 456hp and 365Nm of torque on tap. The AWD version gets a second motor, bumping output up to 764hp and 775Nm. As both are equipped with the same second-generation BYD Blade Battery, they get the same fast-charging capabilities.

Are you looking forward to BYD’s Flash Chargers in the Philippines? Or would you rather see more fully electric options on the market?
