The BYD Seagull and Dolphin have a new big brother. This is the Seal 6 GT, and it is BYD’s latest electric hatchback—and dare we say it, the brand’s first hot hatch. Let us explain: It packs a rear-wheel-drive system, aerodynamic styling, and its numbers on paper show some promise.
But you can be the judge. The Seal 6 GT makes use of a single electric motor powered by a 69.07kWh battery. Overall, it makes around 322hp and 270Nm of torque, which are very peppy numbers. It needs 6.5sec to get from a standstill to 100kph, which makes it just a bit slower than the FL5 Honda Civic Type R and the Toyota GR Corolla.
Admittedly, there are not a lot of other fully electric performance-focused hatchbacks to compare it to. The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI has yet to be debuted, and we’re still waiting for the Kia EV4 GT’s official release.

Nevertheless, the fully electric hot hatch is still an exciting segment to see unfold. While these vehicles are keen on spirited driving, there’s still some sense of practicality and comfort.
In the case of the Seal 6 GT, cargo capacity is plenty. The trunk can accommodate 380 liters, or up to 1,058 liters with the seats folded. There is also a 33-liter front trunk for extra storage.
And as a grand tourer, BYD’s newest hatchback features comfortable leather seats with heating and cooling features. The Seal 6 GT also makes use of the second-generation Blade Battery, which should support its 620km driving range. The latest version of DiPilot, BYD’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, is also onboard.
