The BYD Sealion 5 DM-i has received an all-new design and a more powerful plug-in hybrid system in China. It’s offered in four variants, with the range-topping version now able to do 305km of range in full-electric mode, and over 2,000km when the electric motor works with the 1.5-liter generator.
These figures are achieved with a new 34.275kWh battery, which is larger than the battery pack found on the subcompact Seagull. Lower configurations use a smaller 26.628kWh unit, capable of 220km in battery-powered range.

However, power performance is similar across the board. A single-motor setup is found on all variants, with 161hp and 210Nm of torque on tap. The 1.5-liter engine then makes 99hp and 126Nm.

Design-wise, the Sealion 5 replaces the previous model’s grille with a flatter, more EV-looking fascia. The headlights are also thinner with softer edges, giving a more casual and urban impression. Inside, all variants get the same faux-leather upholstery and a 15.6-inch center screen.

According to BYD’s official website, the top-spec Sealion 5 oddly doesn’t get the full suite of the brand’s advanced driver-assistance systems. Buyers looking for the complete DiPilot system will need to purchase the second-tier variant, with a smaller battery and less range.
With Auto China 2026 coming up, we should expect BYD to make more announcements on new vehicles and global releases. Would you want to see this in the Philippines? Let us know in the comments section.
