It’s safe to say that the Japanese automakers and Ford have a comfortable share of the pickup market. So far, it’s one segment that the Chinese have yet to truly penetrate, at least locally. Lately, however, they’ve been rolling out more pickups in the hopes of making a dent in the segment.
BYD and Changan have been making a lot of noise with their trucks, namely the Shark 6 DM-O and Hunter. But there might be a new contender in the mix with Chery entering the ring.

Meet the Chery Himla, and it’s the company’s first serious effort in the pickup class. The main target? Why it’s the Toyota Hilux, of course.

The what, now? Okay, it’s Himla, not himala, but it might not take a miracle for Chery to make a mark in the competitive segment. The Chinese automaker is planning to offer a wide variety of models for the Himla. The company will make workhorse variants, as well as lifestyle models, as well as offer gas, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

For its design, there’s a massive grille that’s now typical in its class. Interestingly, it has bumper mounted headlights with LED daytime running lights placed up high. There’s not much in the way of body details on the sides, but there are anchor points on the outside of the bed.
Inside, it’s what we’ve come to expect from Chinese cars. There’s a massive screen in the middle with not much in the way of physical buttons. There’s a slim display in front of the driver for instrumentation. We can also see a high set center console, and the cabin materials appear to be high grade.

Unfortunately, there are no technical specifications out for the Chery Himla just yet. But, as mentioned, there will be a mix of powertrain options from gas, diesel, and plug-in hybrid. We’re expecting four-wheel drive available as it is a pickup, after all.
