It’s not secret that the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok are related in more ways than one. The two pickups share the same chassis and engines, some exterior panels, and a few bits of the interior. The reason why these two trucks are related is thanks to the Ford-Volkswagen alliance for commercial vehicles.
With that in mind, Volkswagen can practically make its own version of the Ford Everest. After all, the hardware and software needed to make it possible. Carsten Intra, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, previously mentioned that the partnership could also bring in a Ranger-based SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain carrying the VW badge.

That said, the intent doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to happen. But a recent update hints that Volkswagen is seriously considering an SUV-fied Amarok.

Albert Kirzinger, the head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, recently shared a concept ‘exploring design ideas for the Amarok pickup truck’. The photo? It’s the pickup reimagined as an SUV. Kirzinger didn’t confirm it for production, but the fact that the company put effort into it bodes well for the truck-based VW SUV.
Interestingly, there have been some publications suggesting it’s an axed project. Conversely, there are also those saying that it might push through down the line. There is another theory to this, and this design concept might be turned into a Scout model.
Either way, it will be interesting to see if the company pushes through with the plan. If so, it will be one of the few European SUVs that will used a pickup-based chassis.
