The idea of electric midsize pickups aren’t as far-fetched as it once was. You have Toyota set to roll out a battery-powered Hilux in 2026, and there’s Isuzu with its D-Max EV set to debut sometime in 2025.

Not wanting to be outdone, it seems that Ford wants in the EV midsize pickup class, too. That’s because it has been reported that the Ford Ranger EV is slated for release in 2027.

A press release from Ford appears to have hinted that. “The first affordable vehicle off this new platform will be a mid-sized electric pickup launching in 2027 that is expected to cater to customers who want more for their money – more range, more utility, more usability.”

While the company didn’t say ‘electric Ford Ranger’ outright, the fact that it used ‘mid-sized pickup’ in its statement suggests a battery-powered version of the said pickup. But there’s another part of the quote that’s worth pointing out.

It mentioned a new platform, which could be one of two things. It’s either an all-new Ranger chassis could be out by 2027, or the Ranger EV could be spun off from a dedicated EV platform.

Presently, the Ranger is making steps towards electrification with the plug-in hybrid model. It was first shown in September 2023, with production starting later this year. Rollout of this model will begin in early 2025. There are no detailed specifications just yet, but Ford did share a few things about it.

It will use a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbopetrol engine that pairs with a battery for a target of 45 kilometers of all-electric range. The pickup’s battery can also be used to power tools and outdoor appliances thanks to something called Pro Power Onboard. Ford also claims a towing capacity of 3,500kg, the same as the 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel models.
