The Honda HR-V RS e:HEV in Japan gets a feature we don’t

We’re not counting on it coming here, though

One could say that having a Honda HR-V is like having a slice of Japanese motoring. Known as the Vezel in its home market, the HR-V is one of Honda’s best-sellers there, and you’ll pretty much spot a good number of them while walking around the streets.

With the introduction of the hybrid model in the Philippines, we can say that the local HR-V is pretty close to the Japanese-spec Vezel. After all, the Japan-market model gets that powertrain, too.

This time around, it’s Japan that gets a version that’s been available in Southeast Asia for years. For the first time ever, the HR-V/Vezel gets an RS version. Great news then for HR-V owners who’d like to dress up their crossover like the home market version.

Of course, Japan gets a version that we don’t get in the region. Over there, their RS e:HEV can be specified with all-wheel drive. We’re trying not to be jealous.

While it might not sound like a big deal, who wouldn’t want an all-wheel drive hybrid subcompact crossover? There’s the benefit of added traction and stability, and there’s that bit more peace of mind when traversing over loose surfaces.

Tick that option and this electrified Honda HR-V benefits from RealTime AWD. Yes, it’s the same tech found in the CR-V, meaning it sends power to the rear wheels only when absolutely necessary. Another advantage of choosing the all-wheel drive model is that the rear suspension gets an upgrade, too. More grip and better handling? Yes please.

As for the powertrain, it’s the same as the two-wheel-drive version. That means a 1.5-liter Atkinson Cycle engine mated to two electric motors. Total system output is rated at 129hp and 253Nm.

Sadly, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get this version of the Honda HR-V in the country. As it is, the electrified HR-V already retails for P1,899,000 in the Philippines, and adding AWD will likely push it over the P2 million mark. Still, if we find ourselves in Japan with the chance to rent one out, we totally would.
